Burgundy limestone originates from marine sediments. It is a limestone from the secondary Jurassic era.
It dates from 140 to 160 million years ago, that is the era of the dinosaurs.
In this era Burgundy was covered by a sea with temperatures similar to the Caribbean, a tropical climate !
Burgundy limestone through the ages
Some archaeologists have recorded stone constructions dating back to the 1st century A.D., near Dijon.
From the 11th century, Cistercians democratized the use of Burgundy limestone. The proximity with its territory combined with significant promotion of its virtues have resulted in the construction of Monuments in Burgundy limestone that are renowned and classified by UNESCO World Heritage, such as the Abbeys of Notre-Dame de Citeaux and Fontenay and the Vézelay Basilica.
Over the years, Burgundy limestone is becoming better known. Until recently reserved for regional requirements, it is now supplied throughout France, notably thanks to the inland waterway network. Nowadays one can find Burgundy limestone throughout the world.
